CHERRIES
California & Washington
The cherry season begins with early varieties like Corals and Brooks, which signal the arrival of this highly anticipated fruit. These early-season cherries are quickly followed by the harvest of Tulares, known for their vibrant color and sweet flavor. As the season progresses, the spotlight shifts to Bings, the premier cherry variety. Bings are renowned for their heart-shaped form, deep red to almost black color, and exceptional flavor, making them a favorite among consumers. This iconic variety serves as the grand finale to California’s short but bountiful six-week cherry season.
Once the California season concludes, the cherry harvest transitions to Washington, where growers continue to supply the market with a wide range of varieties. While most Washington cherries are marketed as “Dark Sweet” or Bing, the region boasts an impressive diversity of red cherry varieties. Over the years, innovative breeding programs have developed earlier and later-maturing varieties, effectively extending the availability of fresh cherries.
The Washington cherry season typically lasts into late July, offering consumers a longer window to enjoy these flavorful and juicy fruits. With its ideal growing conditions, including warm days and cool nights, Washington consistently delivers cherries with exceptional texture, sweetness, and quality.
